Roller Blinds consist of a large piece of fabric which rolls on and off a tube. The tube is secured above a window to allow the blind to be pulled down over the window opening. The tube is fastened in place by two brackets positioned at both sides of the blind, one on the left and one on the right. These brackets are universal allowing the user to either top fix the blind into the recess top, or face fix the blind into the window frame. Top fixing a Roller Blind will allow the blind to be positioned away from the window bypassing the window handle when operated. Face fixing a Roller Blind will generally not allow enough space for the blind to pass any handles. However there is an alternative if this is your preferred fixing method. The blind can be reversed roll meaning the fabric runs off of the front of the tube providing approximately an extra inch (25mm) of space between the fabric and the window handle.
Roller Blinds can be operated by two different methods; the first is called a spring action Roller Blind. This is operated by a pull which is attached to the bottom of the blind and then used to pull the fabric down. The spring is housed within the tube and has a small ball bearing which locks the blind into position when the blind is stopped. This style of blind can be difficult to use as the spring is wound extremely tight ensuring maximum tension. However if the blind is let go without locking into place, there will be no resistance and the blind would shoot up towards the tube possibly causing damage to the blind.
The second preferred method is called a sidewinder action Roller Blind. This is the much preferred method as the blind can be controlled by pulling the sidewinder cord which can be positioned on the left or right hand side providing complete control over the blind.
Roller Blinds can be used in lots of different locations. However the larger the window, the larger the piece of fabric thus increasing the weight of the blind. This will put pressure on the tube possibly leading to bowing over time. If you do have a large Roller Blind, ensure the tube used is aluminium apposed to the cheaper cardboard tubes which are available on the market.

The Legionnaires disease is a potentially deadly form of pneumonia which can affect anybody, but which principally affects those who are susceptible because of age, illness, smoking and more. It was named like that after a severe outbreak of pneumonia that hit a meeting of the American Legion in the seventies.
It is caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophila and related bacteria that can be found naturally in environmental water sources such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs, usually in low numbers. As they are commonly found in environmental sources they may also be found in purpose built water systems such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers and whirlpool spas. As a matter of fact, many other species of the organism and mild illnesses other than pneumonia may be caused by those organisms. Thirty four other species have actually been identified.
If conditions are favourable the bacteria may grow creating conditions in which the risk from Legionnaires‘disease is increased.
The symptoms of that disease are actually very similar to those of the flu. People usually become infected by the bacteria when they breathe in the legionella bacteria which have been released into the air in aerosolised form from a contaminated source. Once in the lungs the bacteria multiply and can cause either pneumonia or a less serious flu like illness.
This organism lives in the water. It can only cause disease when water droplets containing the bacterium enter the atmosphere as fine particles or in an aerosol that enables them to be inhaled deep into the lungs as said before. Cooling towers are often a source of infection, as they produce a very fine aerosol. So too have air conditioning systems, especially if poorly maintained. The disease is not actually spread from person-to-person, and fifty percent of the outbreaks have been linked to whirlpool spas or hot tubs.
Like for asbestos with asbestos surveys, legionella risk assessment needs to be done if necessary to make sure everything is fine. Control and prevention of this disease in the work environment and elsewhere can be done through a treatment of the source of the infection by simply treating the contaminated water system.
Awareness of Legionella and the potentially lethal effects of the Legionnaires’ disease have grown rapidly in recent years, as did the request to get legionella training or legionella risk assessment. With several major outbreaks and high profile prosecutions under the Health & Safety at Work Act it is now more important than ever that organisations and individuals understand their legal duties and the serious consequences of a failure to comply with the law.

The most important thing when choosing a walking stick is to get the correct height.
The easiest way to discover what height stick you need is to stand up straight with your arms to your side and measure the distance from your wrist to the ground, then this is the height you need.
It is important to find out more about the measurements of a walking stick on a website before you buy because sometimes the measurements shown describe the total height (i.e to the top of the handle) and sometimes it is the height from the ground to the underneath of the handle. It is best to have a lightweight stick that folds or collapses down to a small size that can be kept in a handbag or rucksack when it is not needed so that you don’t need to unneccessarily carry around a walking stick.
A flip stick or foldaway seat is a good option if you need a seat when out and about when there might not be any available (i.e at an outdoor event such as a fair or in an airport). Flip sticks usually incorporate a seat and a walking stick (with handle)in one, so you have the choice of a quick seat or stick as required.
If a walking stick is going to be used for frequent use, then a lightweight stick with a comfortable handle is the best thing, or perhaps even two sticks to evenly distribute your weight and the pressure on your hands.
The fifth point to consider is where the walking stick will be used.
Will it be used around the house, for going to the shops and out and about, for walks in the countryside or to take away on holidays?
For use around the home, you will a stick with a rubber ferrule (tip) which provides a better grip on slippery surfaces than steel or brass ferrules. For general use around town, things to consider are the same as the previous points already mentioned.
For country walkers and hikers; lightweight hiking polesare an excellent choice as they are strong, lightweight and most importantly, adjustable. Usually sold as a pair, hiking poles can be easily and quickly adjusted in height. This is particularly useful for hill walking because you can shorten both sticks to ascend, lengthen to descend or have them at different heights for walking across a hill on a steep slope to help keep your balance.
